Moving house can be quite a stressful experience if not handled correctly. You’ve just gone through all the stress of getting the mortgage in the first place – why is there more?! Fortunately, it’s quite easy to make your move feel breezy, with the help of a few top tips.
So, sit back, relax, put your feet up and have a read of the following post. There’s bound to be something you haven’t thought of here, and it could save you a lot of hassle!
- Get rid of all your junk beforehand
Moving home is the perfect opportunity to purge all your unnecessary belongings. The benefits of this are twofold. One, you’ll have less stuff to take you when you move house, saving on packing and unpacking time. Two, you’ll narrow down your clothes and belongings to the bare essentials, and this can help you save space in your new home.
- Get your items boxed up for you
This could be considered lazy, but I’d consider it efficient. No matter which moving company you choose, you need to feel relaxed right? Most of them will package your items up too, to save you the hassle. We all know what a pain it can be to be shoving all your things in boxes in an organized fashion. Professional companies use special materials that can protect your items in transit. Win!
- Pack an overnight bag
When you first arrive, all your boxes unloaded from the van, it can be hard to find what you need for that first night. However, you read this post, and decided to pack an overnight bag! You savvy devil. This could contain a change of clothes, a toothbrush and anything else you may need in the short-term. You won’t have to go rooting through boxes for your stuff either.
- Keep screws, nuts and bolt in freezer bags
We all know how finicky these little items can be, so keep them all secured in a sealable bag to keep them safe. You could use a freezer bag, a ziplock bag, or any other container that can be sealed tightly. The last thing you want is for nuts and bolts to be spilling everywhere.
- Take pictures to remember layout
Whether you’re moving to the country or the city, you’ll have to set up everything again on the other side. That means you may have to piece appliances back together, or remember where certain wires go. You might even have to build things from scratch again! Taking pictures of your stuff in its final form is a good way to help you when you get to the new house. You won’t be figuring out which cable goes where. You can just check a picture!
And that just about does it! Remember, moving house doesn’t have to be a stressful experience. It’s the start of your new adventure and your new life, so make sure you enjoy every single step. By following these important tips, you’ll give yourself the happiest possible start in your new property. Best of luck!

My favorite tip is to pack an overnight bag. I have moved more than 15 times in my life and I somehow never pack an overnight bag. Now that I have a toddler and am trying to move next spring that overnight bag is going to be absolutely necessary. Thanks for sharing!

I agree– it’s so helpful and important to get rid of unnecessary things before moving. I don’t think that anyone would really want to haul the same unused clutter from apartment to apartment– it’s a real hassle. But decluttering, too, is considered by some to be a hassle!
Thanks for the tips. 🙂
